Sera Prognostics used proteomic technology to create a test to Predict Early a woman’s individual preterm birth risk. Better understanding of the protein pathways expressed in pregnancy provides hope of being able to understand causes of preterm birth and make further advancements in prolonging gestational age & improving newborn outcomes.
Proteins regulate all cell functions and may be over- or under-expressed based upon an individual’s health status. This can be predictive of future health risk—in this case, much earlier than the onset of preterm birth symptoms. The differential expression of proteins can be detected early enough to predict individual risk and enable individualized interventions designed to manage her risk and give her baby the best start in life.
Proteomics—the study of proteins—provides a current functional ‘snapshot’ of the biology of an individual pregnancy. Proteomics goes beyond inheritance (genetics and genetic mutations) and allows direct measurement of protein expression - how the functions of life are carried out.
